Why it is important

Water security is one of the biggest global challenges especially for the Middle East, including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the world’s most water-scarce region.

If current climate, urbanization and consumption trends continue, water demand is set to rise in the KSA by about 62% by 2025. To counter the growing demand, water infostructure investments are being made to increase capacity, conserve water resources and manage consumption levels. The increasing complexity of the challenges surrounding the water sector necessitates a paradigm shift beyond traditional water and sewerage infrastructure.

In the past few years, there has been a sharp increase in the uptake of digital technologies and their integration into water services. Various stakeholders in KSA (owner /operators, engineering consultants and contractors) are increasingly adopting technologies such as desalination, ground water, water re-use schemes, smart water grids, smart metering and digital twins to increase existing supply and production capacity.
